Ravens' Haven - Something about Dartmoor

Would you Adam and Eve it?  Yes – it’s another blog post originating from Ravens’ Haven!   For me – there’s nowhere else better to escape to on Dartmoor – on a hot, busy bank holiday weekend Sunday – than ‘my’ cool, green cathedral – Ravens’ Haven.  No matter how many times I walk through it – there is always something new to WOW me.

Our visit to Dartmoor started with a quick shufti around Tavistock’s Guildhall Square – where there was a plant sale going on.  Inside the cool, exterior granite walls of the market place – an oasis of greenness welcomed us in.  And despite attracting an obvious hubbub of interest – the sea of plants seemed to exude a feeling of calmness about the place. Tavistock Pannier Market - Something about Dartmoor

Outside in stark contrast, beneath a baking Sun – a number of market stalls had been set-up in the Square.  I was drawn to a stall selling antlers of the culled variety – a selection of different shapes and sizes on offer but no eight (sixteen) pointers – like my ‘royal’ shed antler. Sadly these stags never got the chance to live that long.Antlers for sale! Tavistock Market - Something about Dartmoor

With no money spent this time – it was onward and upwards to the Moor – to a greener oasis. Dartmoor oasis - Something about DartmoorSnakes in the grass are absolutely free - Something about Dartmoor

My first “WOW!” came when a noticed something small and snake-like rising from the grass – it’s a snake’s head fern! Snake's Head Fern - Something about DartmoorIt brought back a lost memory – of an anthem from my youth – ‘Go wild in the country’ by Bow Wow Wow!   As I rambled on through the wood I found myself happily singing the words much to Tom’s bemusement; I’m such an education to him!

“Wild, go wild, go wild in the country where snakes in the grass are absolutely free…”

My next WOW moment lay on a bed of dried leaves and twigs – it was a beautiful, naturally-aged fox skull complete with resident fly.  Image can be enlarged by clicking on it – to see the shimmer on the fly’s wings. Beauty is everywhere even on the smallest, seemingly insignificant things.Fox Skull and fly - Something about DartmoorMy next exultation – ‘Heart of an Oak’.Heart of an Oak - Something about Dartmoor

A fairy’s door in the shape of a perfect heart – symbolic of Nature’s gift to us all.  We spent about three hours lost in ‘This Eden’ – slowly wending our way through – no hurry, no worries – just time to absorb.

In a physical sense – I didn’t go home empty handed either – the Corvids just keep on giving.  WOWIE!ST839312

Here are the complete lyrics to ‘Go Wild in the Country’ by Bow Wow Wow – (You’ll be pleased to learn – hot as the day was – 29th May 2016 – my clothes were kept on at all times!)  Enjoy!

I don’t like you, I don’t like you, town
I don’t wanna like you, I’ll shop around
I don’t want you, I don’t want you, town
I don’t wanna want you, I’ll shop around, I’ll shop around

I can get a train, I don’t need no hamburgers
No take-away, I want my own game
No bacon steak, no strawberry milkshake, I wanna keep it
I’m sick of seeing signe to eat walking down these lonely streets

Wild, go wild, go wild in the country
Where snakes in the grass are absolutely free
Wild, go wild, go wild in the country
Where snakes in the grass are absolutely free

I don’t know you, I won’t know you, town
I don’t wanna know you, I’ll shop around, I’ll shop around

I can get a train, I don’t need no hamburgers
No take-away, I want my own game
No bacon steak, no strawberry milkshake
I do better, well, I do better

Sweet from the trees, nakes in the breeze
But I got no boiled chicken, I wanna go hunting and fishing

I can get a plane, I don’t need no suitcases, ’cause truth loves to go naked

I wanna picnic, ’cause I get sick
Got no boiled chicken, I wanna go hunting and fishing

I can get a train, I don’t need no hamburgers
No take-away, I want my own game
